Great Siege of Gibraltar

The Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783) is not a stand-alone event but one which was to have implications for world events long into the future.  It also played a pivotal part in the outcome of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783).

This is the dramatic story of the longest siege ever endured by British servicemen.  Starvation, bombardments, infantry attacks, sea battles, smuggling and international peace negotiations all form part of this intriguing story. The most famous element is the French and Spanish attack upon Gibraltar using purpose-built floating gun batteries which the British repulsed with furnace-heated shot which they called, “hot potatoes”.
